At the heart of Remote Writing Jobs is a belief that writers deserve better access to paid work. Since 2023 I’ve built RWJ around that belief by connecting writers with opportunities in a market that too often asks them to give their words away but I’ve always wanted to do more than point writers toward open doors. I want to open some myself to create paid opportunities where there might otherwise be none, make room for voices that deserve a wider audience, and invest in original work by paying writers directly.

That vision led me to launch my first in-house publication. I poured myself into the work but I eventually had to step back when I realized I’d taken on more than I could realistically sustain on my own so my attention returned to the directory but the larger idea stayed with me.

What would it look like to build a paying market where writers could bring not only their labor but their ideas, experiences, and ways of seeing the world?

The RWJ Review is my return to that vision.

This time I want to make room for stories beyond the writing industry. Writers have something to say about the world they live in, the people they encounter, the culture they move through, and the experiences that change how they see things and I want The RWJ Review to reflect that breadth.

What I’m Looking For

Personal Essays: 500–800 words

I welcome original essays about relationships, identity, mental health, grief, family, belonging, personal growth, and the complexities of being human.

I’m interested in specific lived experiences that illuminate something beyond the self. Give me the story behind the realization, the contradiction beneath the easy answer, or the perspective that makes an ordinary experience worth reconsidering.

Cultural Commentary: 800–1,200 words

I welcome original commentary on entertainment, internet culture, social trends, public conversations, and modern life.

Bring me a sharp argument, a fresh interpretation, or a perspective that challenges the obvious take. I want to examine not only what’s happening in culture but what it reveals about us, our relationships, and the world we share.

Compensation

I pay a flat rate of $250 for personal essays and $400 for cultural commentary pieces.

Help fund independent publishing

Fair and transparent compensation is central to the publication’s mission not an afterthought. These rates reflect my commitment to treating original work as work worth paying for. As The RWJ Review grows I hope to build on that commitment and increase what I can pay the writers who bring this publication to life.

Sustaining The RWJ Review

This publication is funded primarily by paid subscriptions to Remote Writing Jobs.

That support allows me to commission original work, compensate writers fairly, and sustain The RWJ Review as an independent, paying market.

If you believe in the work I’m doing to strengthen the writing economy and want to help keep this one-woman outlet going, consider becoming a paid subscriber for $15/month or $120/year.

Other Ways to Support

You don’t have to be looking for work to believe writers deserve better access to it.

If you believe in what I’m building through Remote Writing Jobs and The RWJ Review there are several ways to help me sustain this initiative even if a paid subscription for yourself doesn’t make sense right now:

• Gift a subscription to a fellow writer as an investment in their craft and livelihood.

• Donate annual subscriptions to help writers who’ve submitted hardship requests maintain access to RWJ during financially unstable seasons.

• Purchase a group subscription for your writing team, classroom, organization, or other collective. Groups of 5 or more receive 20% off.

• Make a direct contribution through PayPal or Venmo.

Every contribution helps me continue building a paying market for writers where their work is met with more than appreciation. It’s met with compensation.

How to Pitch

If you believe your voice is a strong fit for this publication, I welcome your pitch at rwjsubstack@gmail.com.

Please include:

• A working title

• A concise summary of the piece

• The central angle or takeaway

• Category and estimated word count

• A short bio and relevant writing samples if available

Please pitch before writing the full piece. Pitches should be developed with one of my two categories, published word counts, and stated rates in mind. If a piece is accepted I’ll confirm the assignment details and deadline before drafting begins.

The RWJ Review welcomes writers worldwide. You can pitch from anywhere regardless of where you live or are based.

Ownership & Credit

Writers maintain full ownership of their work. Pieces must be original and unpublished elsewhere before appearing here. After publication you’re free to republish or distribute your work as you choose. Every piece includes your byline and a tip jar where readers can support you directly. My role is to give your work visibility, pay you fairly, and honor your voice but the creative control remains with you.

Response Time

I read each pitch and aim to respond within 2–3 weeks. As a one-person operation I may not be able to offer detailed feedback on every submission but each idea receives individual consideration. If three weeks pass without a response, a polite follow-up is always welcome.

Commissioning Schedule

The job directory remains the foundation of RWJ. This publication is a natural extension of that work meant to deepen the mission rather than distract from it. To maintain focus and quality my goal is to commission 1–3 carefully selected pieces each month. This measured pace ensures every story receives the editorial attention it deserves while preserving the platform’s core purpose of helping writers find the work they need to sustain their careers.

Thank you for helping me create space for the kind of publishing where writers aren’t simply asked to contribute but are actively invested in.
