Introducing What Writing Paid For
Writing, seen through what it makes possible.
For a long time I’ve noticed something about writing.
Most people only see the finished work.
The article.
The essay.
The poem.
The byline.
What they don’t see is everything that work makes possible.
A bill that gets covered.
A meal that didn’t have to wait.
A laptop that finally gets replaced.
A train ride home.
A small stretch of breathing room in a hard month.
So today I’m starting something new called What Writing Paid For:
It’s a community archive built from photos and short reflections submitted by writers showing what their work made possible.
Not income reports or productivity advice but honest glimpses into the lives being sustained, supported, and changed by writing.
Why?
Writing isn’t only what we create. It’s also the life we’re able to build because we kept going.
If writing has ever paid for something in your life, I’d love to see it. Send a photo and a one-sentence caption on what writing made possible for you to melissa@remotewritingjobs.org.
I’m grateful for anything you choose to share.
Access is $5/month and all proceeds are reinvested into RWJ’s in-house publication where writers are commissioned and paid $1/word for stories on the craft, culture, and business of writing.
By joining, you’re not only supporting an archive, you’re helping create the conditions for more writers to be paid fairly for their work.
This project doesn’t just document what writing makes possible. It helps make more of it possible.
In honor of what writing makes real,
Melissa Tripp
